How I Used LinkedIn to Get My Dream Job
I was sitting at my desk at Wheel of Fortune as a receptionist with not a clue what was coming for me next. I was doing some free work at LAFoodie.com, a Los Angeles food blog, to basically get experience in blogging and social media. Little did I know that would turn into a full time job? Well, it did, eventually.
I was walking around the Sony lot in Culver City, Ca and saw the sign. Literally. They were putting up these signs for Queen Latifah’s new daytime talk show. I immediately was like, WHAT?! I want to work for the Queen. I always loved her and always thought it’d be cool to work for such an icon. And, I was a young 20-something in Hollywood, living the “Dream.”
So, I turned to LinkedIn, yes, LinkedIn. Did you know that you can find a dream job with the proper LinkedIn profile and SEO-friendly profile? I got on that search engine and started searching! I wound up finding the head of the digital on the show. I immediately looked at our mutuals and contacted a few that I knew directly. They were super helpful and got me in touch with her. I will forever be grateful because they not only helped me land my dream job but they started my career.
Moral of that story is 3-fold:
Have a proper LinkedIn profile that is UPDATED because you never know when…
Don’t be scared to reach out to people to help you. Everyone does it!
Network, network, network!
Needless to say, it was the beginning of an incredible and illustrious career that I have to thank LinkedIn for.
Later on in my career, I used LinkedIn differently and landed a job at Shutterstock as Director of Social Media.
